-Connecting With Characters
We will be engaging in retelling of stories, then moving to noticing what a character does in a story. After practicing this, students will think more deeply about a character's patterns of behavior, consider how a character feels and how he/she changes throughout a story using pictures and words as evidence.
-Learning About the World Through Informational Text
In this unit, students will dissover how to learn about the world through reading. Readers will move from identifying informational texts to establishing the main topic, retelling and asking questions about what they are learning. Students will work in book clubs to complete research and celebrate becoming an expert on a topic.

In this unit, students will continue to write small moment stories while learning to utilize writing conventions within their writing. Students will attempt to create interesting small moment stories while using conventions to make their writing easier for others to read. This unit will highlight the use of classroom tools, the use of spelling strategies, the use of rereading when writing, and the use of writing partners to help them share personal stories clearly and concisely.
-Opinion Writing
In this unit, students will learn to form opinions and share reasons for their opinions with others by writing letters and giving informational speeches. Students will see writing as a vehicle for change as they work to persuade others

As students are acquainted with diverse classmates, they develop awareness of the similarities among individuals in the classroom as well as within the school, community and world. Comparing family traditions enables students to accept and appreciate their pluralistic society and acquire a sense of purpose regarding their role and the role of other citizens within the community and world. They examine why certain events and people are celebrated through national holidays.
